Focal Points
The International Coral Reef Initiative Secretariat stresses local/national level actions to achieve success for the IYOR campaign. For this reason, ICRI encourages countries and organizations to nominate a key point of contact (or focal point) to facilitate participation in the International Year of the Reef.
Focal point activities are critical to ensure all potential IYOR participants are engaged and active. Responsibilities of IYOR 2008 focal points vary between organizations, however they are recommended to do the following (when and if possible):
- share their activities with the ICRI IYOR coordinator and make sure it is available on the ICRI IYOR web site;
- act as an information relay to promote awareness of, and interest in, IYOR 2008;
- facilitate the planning and implementation of contributions to IYOR 2008, including, where appropriate, the endorsement of ICRI IYOR recommendations/resolutions;
- encourage and facilitate the provision of necessary funds, logistical support, and other support for the implementation of local, national activities contributing to the IYOR 2008 objectives;
Each focal point will have a dedicated space within the IYOR 2008 web site where relevant and useful information can be posted related to their efforts. This space will include a place for a contact information, a list of planned IYOR activities, any IYOR materials produced, and so forth.
