PERSGA will integrate IYOR 2008 in most of its activities. Mainly the idea of the IYOR will be distributed through few publications and seminars in each activities showing the importance of the reefs and its economical and social important, as well as how everyone can hep in protecting and conserving the marine life. The awareness programme will include several activities for school children's; coastal local communities; Media interviews and shows; all the intended activities will be inserted in PERSGA website and its regular newsletter (Al-Sanbouk).

Past activities

  • Coral Reef survey in Djibouti in celebration of IYOR by Dr. Kotb

    A coral reef survey was relaize in Djibouti (the mission was in 21 April till 4 March 2008) in celebration to the IYOR by PERSGA. At this occassion, PERSGA raised also awareness about IYOR to several governamtal officials and to the diving industry sector.

  • September 7th, 2007: PERSGA used a clean-up campaign organised by a local diving centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (Desert-Sea-Divers) in collaboration with PADI (Project Aware), to spread the word about the International Year of the Reef 2008.

    PERSGA participated to this event through its "Regional Marine Letter Programme" and added a monitoring dimension to this clean-up campaign (the collected debris were sorted and quantified). 50 dedicated volunteered divers, who made three dives each to clean three dive sites participated to this event. During the opening ceremony, PERSGA staff distributed the an IYOR 2008 Brochure to the all the participants.

    PERSGA Marine Litter Programme is implemented in collaboration with UNEP. Cleanups and public awareness campaigns will continue in the different member states during 2008 and more information will be available soon.
