Focus

The Gulf of Mannar, Southeast India (for information about the GOM)

SDRMI promoting IYOR 2008 at the International Workshop on Gulf of
Mannar Biosphere Reserve "An Ecological Model for Biodiversity Conservation,
Livelihood and Sustainability" in Chennai, 20-21 September 2007

Plan of Action

• Television media campaign through video clippings (30 seconds) in local cable TV channels since May 2008 (weekly)

• Broadcasting weekly (every Wednesday, 15 minutes) IYOR programs (speeches / discussions / interviews by officials, researchers, villagers, conservation managers) in All India Radio since May 2008. The first talk was given by the Tuticorin District Collector Dr. R. Palaniyanidi.

• Documentary on the value and importance of coral reefs and the need for their conservation and sustainable, in VCD format, in the final stage of preparation.

• Printing of 10,000 posters [in local language (Tamil) - size 30" X 20")] on coral reefs is in the final stage for distribution in the coastal villages, schools and government and non government organizations in the Gulf of Mannar coastal area.
