Upcoming activities

The UNEP Caribbean Environment Programme (UNEP-CEP) will be promoting the upcoming International Year of the Reef through a number of activities during 2007.

• The sixth UNEP/CAMPAM "Training of Trainers Course for Marine Protected Area Managers" will be convened in Tulum, Mexico 9-23 September 2007 on all aspects of MPA management. This opportunity will be used to promote IYOR and to discuss upcoming activities. Following the regional course, each participant will implement local training activities which also will take into account the IYOR. The course is jointly sponsored by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, UNEP-CEP, The Nature Conservancy Mesoamerican Reef Program and CONANP in Mexico.
• The Fourth Meeting of the Interim Scientific, Technical and Advisory Committee (ISTAC) to the Protocol Concerning Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS Protocol) in the Wider Caribbean Region will be convened 21-27 October 2007 in Peten, Guatemala (ISTAC 4) during which the IYOR will be promoted and relevant information distributed to the various countries.
• The regional Coral Reef Consultation for the Wider Caribbean is part of a series of workshops planned globally in advance of the July 2008 11th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS). The purpose of these workshops will be to ascertain what new science is needed to improve coral reef management regionally and how existing science can best be applied to help those regional managers. UNEP-CEP will organize a 2 day regional consultation for the Wider Caribbean in conjunction with the 60th annual Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute Conference, 5-9 November in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The second day of the workshop will be dedicated to discussion on IYOR preparations in the region. Additional information will be available in due course from the websites of the UNEP-CEP and the GCFI.

Past activities

Promotion of the IYOR among Wider Caribbean Governments at Intergovernmental and Contracting Parties Meeting of Caribbean Regional Seas Programme. Decisions were adopted at those meetings in December 2006 welcoming IYOR and requesting organisations and countries to participate:
